Jeff Foxworthy should be a fortune teller.  While doing some research today on what is incorrectly labeled the Confederate Flag (there were three national flags of the Confederacy and numerous battle flags, one of which is often designated as the one and only) I found an old video from Foxworthy’s TV days.  He and Larry the Cable Guy are discussing the upcoming Dukes of Hazzard movie and they envision it sanitized to please the harping left.  You can see the short video here.

At about the same time I was listening to some of the debate from South Carolina where state legislators are bowing to political correctness and media pressure.  Some years ago the old battle flag came down from the capitol dome and was placed nearby at a memorial.  Now the banner is on its way to a museum.  None of this was an issue until the recent tragic shooting at a South Carolina church.  Nine people are dead.  They were “people-of-color”.  Descendants mainly of slaves, albeit.  No one alive today has any inkling of those days.  They were shot by an angry young white man.  He had posed with various symbols he had adopted and including the battle flag of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.  Here’s my question.  Had he posed with a handful of pecans would we be banning the sale of nuts and confining them only to what you can grow on your own property?  Look, folks, a racist can adopt anything he chooses as a symbol.  In the movie Life of Brian the followers of a mistaken messiah immediately schism in a dispute over symbols.  Some wish to use a gourd he dropped and others a sandal their savior lost.

As you can see in this video I recorded at a recent fundraiser the patriotic band Madison Rising explains the American Flag is loaded with meaning.  Alternately the flags of the old Confederacy don’t carry the same weight in the current public consciousness.  A vast majority sees it as a benign regional standard.  Only a handful of extremists carry it as a symbol of racial supremacy.  Some are deeply offended but I believe many of the offended are looking for any old slight.  If not a flag then a gourd, perhaps?

Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen warns in this piece today we may be getting a wee bit silly when it comes to whitewashing the past.  It’s done by totalitarian regimes, fictional and non-fictional.  He mentions Stalin in the non-fiction arena.  We could nominate George Orwell in the fictional account.  Orwell was as prescient as Jeff Foxworthy.  Lefty insists Germany outlawed the Nazi swastika because it offends potentially millions and, yet.  We aren’t Europe.  Not at the moment and many of those millions still go to the movies and see historical depictions of the same symbol.  Which was adopted by a racist regime after millennia of innocuous use.

As I was getting ready to leave work someone e-mailed me this link.  Some nitwit runs into highway traffic to remove a Confederate battle flag from the trailer of a big rig.  What does it symbolize?  Theft.  Really, do you need to see a black man stealing the property of someone else?  Doesn’t that match a great many stereotypes?  Will Lefty now denounce crime or will he celebrate breaking the law and absconding with the property of another as just another means for civil disobedience.  Soon, very soon, someone inspired by the ginned up media outrage is going to attempt the theft of a flag from more stationary private property.  If the thief gets a load of buckshot in the ass then the media will have its coup-de-grace:  Mean racist shoots black boy.  Then Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Rahm Emanuel and Bill de Blasio can encourage their constituents to riot, burn and loot.  You don’t think for a moment they’ll let a crisis go to waste?
