ABC Sets Three-Hour ‘Dirty Dancing’ Musical With Abigail Breslin … Uh, Sure
Social media success of NBC’s live musicals (not to mention the actual success of The Wiz) already goaded FOX into Grease and Rocky Horror remakes, and now ABC has its own baby no one’s putting in a corner. Dirty Dancing will get the three-hour musical treatment, starring Scream Queens alum Abigail Breslin to boot.
Bearing in mind that the new Dirty Dancing won’t actually air as a live performance, Breslin will star as the new “Baby,” an “an innocent young woman in the early 1960’s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor.”
Original screenplay writers Allison Shearmur and Eleanor Bergstein will executive produced the effort, while The L Word alum Jessica Sharzer will write the adaptation. Wayne Blair will direct. with music from Adam Anders and Glee alum Peer Astrom, and choreography by Hamilton‘s Andy Blankenbuehler.
No timetable has yet been confirmed, nor stars beyond Breslin, but we’d wager ABC’s three-hour (seriously, let that sink in) will unfurl sometime in 2016. We wouldn’t be surprised if Jennifer Grey put in an appearance either, given the ABC in the family. Watch the original Dirty Dancing trailer below.
