FBI Investigating Shooting of Idaho Rancher
BOISE, Idaho (KTVB) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now looking into the officer-involved shooting death of Adams County rancher Jack Yantis.
U.S. Attorney for Idaho Wendy Olson made the announcement Thursday. Olson confirmed to KTVB that the FBI investigation will take place alongside the Idaho State Police investigation. Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden is serving as a special prosecutor in the case for the state.
Federal investigators will look into whether deputies violated Yantis' Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable seizure. Yantis was shot and killed by Adams County deputies on November 1, after his bull was hit by a Subaru on U.S. Highway 95 outside of Council.
Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman has said an altercation took place and the rancher and two deputies all fired their weapons. Olson said ISP and the attorney general will be looking into the allegations of state criminal violations in the case, while the FBI will be looking into possible federal violations.
