‘Good Dinosaur’ Trailer: Can a Dinosaur Make You Cry?
In an alternate universe, Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur would’ve opened on its original release date, all the way back in November of 2013. But, it hasn’t been an easy road for Pixar’s next movie, which was delayed over two years while the director and cast were replaced, and almost the entirety of the story was rewritten. With the movie just over a month away, was Pixar able to save The Good Dinosaur? Watch the new trailer and see what you think.
We just returned from Pixar’s headquarters in Emeryville, California, where we talked to many members of the creative team behind the retooled Good Dinosaur, and while we can’t say much about our trip yet (stay tuned later this week for much, much more), we can say that new director Peter Sohn had about 20 months to do what takes most Pixar films 4-5 years. This includes replacing most of the cast (Frances McDormand is the only actor from the original production to survive) and completely redesigning the look of the main character, an Apatosaur named Arlo.
We can say that this new trailer is very well done and hits home at the emotional core of the movie: Arlo’s new relationship with Spot, an abandoned cave-boy who doesn’t speak. And, boy, does this film look beautiful. There are nature shots that, if you didn’t know better, you’d think were from a live-action documentary. How will the ultra-real look of the background mesh with the ultra-stylized look of the characters? Well, that’s for you to decide this Thanksgiving.
Here’s how Pixar officially describes the film:
The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.
In addition to McDormand, the voice cast for Good Dinosaur includes Raymond Ochoa, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Zahn, AJ Buckley, Anna Paquin, Sam Elliott, Marcus Scribner and Jack Bright.
The Good Dinosaur opens in theaters on November 25.
