ELK CITY, Idaho (AP) — Nearly 250 residents were trapped in the remote town of Elk City after a massive landslide slid onto Highway 14 on Thursday.

KBOI-TV reports that about 14 tons of debris slid across a section of the highway about 10 miles west of Elk City. Officials with the Idaho Transportation Department say the landslide is about 40 feet deep and was blocking approximately 500 feet of the highway.
