BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The campaign finance reports from the Democrat challenging longtime Idaho GOP Sen. Mike Crapo suggest he's making a serious bid for the office. The Spokesman-Review reports that Jerry Sturgill, an attorney and investment banker, has raised more than $270,000 for his campaign. The funds are nearly all from individuals. He also put in more than $240,000 of his own money.

Reports show he has receipts of more than half a million dollars and cash on hand of $427,514 at the close of the latest reporting period in July. That's a hefty total for a first-time candidate and a Democrat in deep-red Idaho. Crapo's latest campaign finance report shows he had $5.1 million in cash on hand at the close of the last reporting period in July.
