Do People in Idaho Need to Lose Weight?
The holidays are fast approaching, and this time of year, many struggle with putting on a few extra pounds. There is candy from Halloween to be eaten, a big meal on Thanksgiving to eat, with plenty of leftovers to enjoy, and then Christmas cookies, candy, and another big meal. This time of year can be the toughest to keep weight off, and most people put on a few pounds or more. When it comes to obesity and being overweight, where does Idaho rank among other states, and which state is the most overweight in the country?
The Most Overweight States in the United States
While body positivity has helped many cope with having a few extra pounds, nobody likes being overweight and still wants to remain healthy. Some states struggle more with obesity than others, and WalletHub recently released a list ranking the most overweight states. They ranked the states using categories like obesity and overweight prevalence, health consequences, and food and fitness. Using these criteria, it was determined that West Virginia is the most obese state in the country, with Mississippi being second, and Arkansas rounding out the top three. The least obese state, or healthiest state, is Colorado, with Utah being second, and Massachusetts being third. Where does Idaho rank on this list, and do residents in the Gem State need to start hitting the gym?
Are People in Idaho Overweight?
Your pants might be fitting a little tighter this time of year, especially if you have been indulging in Halloween candy and other holiday sweets, but that doesn't mean you are overweight. According to the study, Idaho is the 12th healthiest state, coming in at 40 on the list for the most overweight states. Idaho ranks 46th in obesity and overweight, 17th in health consequences, and 6th in food and fitness. Despite not being among the most overweight states, it appears children are helping with the ranking, as Idaho is tied for fourth in the highest percentage of overweight adults, but has the lowest percentage in the country of children who are overweight. Perhaps all of the hiking, kayaking, or working on farms is helping with much of the rankings, as younger people appear to be healthy and active in the Gem State.

It is ok to enjoy some sweets and to stuff yourself this time of year, but make sure you don't do so too much and find yourself falling into the overweight category. If you do, 2026 is the perfect time to try to lose a few extra pounds and get back to a healthier weight. To check out the full study, make sure to click the link in the second paragraph above.
