The holiday season is here, Christmas music is playing, holiday shopping is taking place, cookies are being baked, and everyone appears to be joyful and happy. You work hard all year and anticipate getting to the holidays to enjoy some much-needed time with the family, and friends, and away from work. Many say that it is the best time of the year, but that is false. The holiday season isn't as nice as many think, and it is actually the worst time of the year and brings out the worst in everyone in Idaho.

Christmas movies and Christmas music are supposed to bring out the best in everyone, but in reality, they are songs that are overplayed and movies that usually aren't that good and tell the same story differently. There are classic songs and classic movies that make the holiday joyful, but you have heard and seen them far too often. That is not what makes the holidays the worst though, instead, it is the people and their actions. Traffic is worse, stores are overcrowded, and the weather is beginning to get colder and colder as the roads get slicker and slicker. There are distractions on the road, especially at night, while drivers look at Christmas lights and displays, leading to more accidents. Instead of being the happiest time of year, it should be dubbed the most dangerous time of year.

While the time off work and with your family can be nice, getting there is not. The traffic becomes worse as the holidays get closer, making many angrier than they already are. More time in traffic means less time at home and less comfort. The stores are far too overcrowded, which means more time in lines, and more time around people, who likely are spreading colds and other diseases. Financial stress builds up, as most of us are spending more money on gifts than we would like and watch our bank accounts get lower and lower. People become more rude throughout the holiday season as well. The struggle and rudeness to find parking is not a joyful experience, the people cutting in lines and pushing others out of the way are not representative of the holiday spirit, and Santa will be bringing coal to everyone that stands in front of a row and blocks others, oblivious to their surroundings.

Call me a Grinch, call me a Scrooge, but as you go out this holiday season, pay attention to your fellow shoppers, and notice the rudeness, the selfishness, and the lack of holiday spirit and joy. It is supposed to be the season of happiness, joy, and giving. These attributes seem to be lacking, and until everyone gets their act together, the holiday season will remain the worst time of the year in Idaho.
