RECALL: Dog, Cat Food Sold In Idaho May Contain 2 Bacteria Types

The maker of a popular brand of pet food has pulled packages of the product due to possible contamination by two separate foodborne bacterial strains. The health department has asked anyone who may have purchased the dog and cat food recently to dispose of it or return it for a full refund.

Portland-based Northwest Naturals has issued a voluntary recall of varieties of its frozen chicken and raw diet foods due to concerns that the bags may have been contaminated with two types of bacteria that could make animals extremely ill, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration release on August 28.

During the process of making the food, circumstances might have resulted in cross-contamination of both Salmonella and Listeria, according to the release.

Humans who may have handled the products and not thoroughly washed their hands may also be at risk of contracting these illnesses.

To date, no illnesses have been reported regarding the flagged products, according to the FDA. Both bacterial strains produce similar symptoms in humans and pets; diarrhea, nausea, and fever are some of the more common ones to watch out for.

Watch for bags of the food stamped UPC 087316384956 or UPC 087316380392, with expiration dates of 1/25/28 and 1/26/28. Dispose of these packages immediately if you have this product. The store with which you made the purchase(s) might also issue a refund.
