Recently, our neighborhood was raided. Well, our cars were. Every vehicle in our cul-de-sac that was unlocked was ransacked. Granted, my neighbors and I asked for the trouble by leaving our doors unlocked. We had become complacent in thinking our neighborhood was safe.

One of my neighbors was surprised to have a car in the driveway when she discovered the break-ins. There was a spare key in the car. While the thieves this time were either only after cash or not that smart, it begs the question. How popular is your car among the thieves underground? It’s a valid concern. Every time your car doesn’t have you in it (and sometimes when it does) there is a possibility of it being stolen. Just how often does it happen in Idaho?

Do You Own the Most Popular Car to Steal in Idaho?

In Idaho in 2022, car theft happened 1,779 times. That’s an increase from 2021 of almost 5 percent. Maybe locking your car when it is parked isn’t too much of a hassle after all. But now the question is, which vehicles in Idaho are most vulnerable to theft? Perhaps which are most popular with thieves? Is that interchangeable?

It’s not surprising that the 4 most popular vehicles stolen in Idaho are all full-size trucks. First Ford, then Dodge, Chevy, and finally GMC. That is followed by the ever-popular in almost every state - Honda Civic. I’m feeling pretty good about my purchases. None of my vehicles is on the top 10 list.

  1. Ford Pick-Up (Full Size)
  2. Chevrolet Pick-Up (Full Size)
  3. Dodge Pick-Up (Full Size)
  4. GMC Pick-Up (Full Size)
  5. Honda Civic
  6. Honda Accord
  7. Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee tied Ram Pick-Up (Full Size)
  8. Toyota Camry
  9. Subaru Legacy, Chevrolet Pick-Up (Small Size), and Chevrolet Impala tied
  10. Toyota 4Runner and Ford Pick-Up (Small Size)

If there is curiosity over how Idaho fares against other states, consider yourselves lucky. California wins out at #1. It’s followed by Texas, Washington, Florida, and rounding up the top 5, Colorado. If there is a time to have a car stolen, midnight to 1 AM is most popular followed by 8-9 AM.

The silver lining is that from 2018 to 2022, there was a decrease in car theft in Idaho. That’s not to say there wasn’t any, but a decrease is good.
