Business is all about making money, but when it comes to working in the medical field, it seems like money should be secondary, and taking care of the patients should be the priority. While many of us like to think that is how it works, at the end of the day it is still a business, and to make extra money, hospitals may have to hide a few things and not give patients all the facts directly. Some hospitals in the state of Idaho are breaking laws and withholding information, and it may catch up to them sooner than later.

The last time you were in the hospital, were you told how much your care would cost upfront? Were you made aware of how much your treatment, your surgery, or overnight stay would cost you? If not, then you are not alone. According to a recent report released by Patientrightsadvocate.org, a large portion of hospitals are continuing to hide the cost for consumers, despite a law passed over two years ago requiring them to post their costs online.

Originally 15 Idaho hospitals were not complying with the law, and while most are now, there are still six hospitals not complying. The hospitals that have yet to comply are as follows:

  • Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center
  • Kootenai Health
  • Portneuf Medical Center
  • Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center
  • St. Luke's Boise Medical Center
  • West Valley Medical Center

While it is good to not see the hospital in Twin Falls on the list, it is still good to know which ones are not complying, if you ever are taken to one of them or in need of their services. Hospitals are required to show their prices upfront, and until all these hospitals start complying with the law, the patients will continue to suffer financially. How can patients know they are being overcharged or not, if the prices are not made available to them?

Unless the rule is enforced, hospitals will continue to hide their prices. Healthcare is far too expensive in this country already, and one of the reasons is that many of us pay whatever we are told without questions, because we aren't aware of the costs upfront, if at all. Make sure to click the link above in the story to find out more about the most recent Semi-Annual Hospital Price Transparency Compliance Report, and the next time you need medical care, be sure to ask about the cost upfront, you'll be glad you did.
