Is Galena Summit Byway Really The Most Perilous South Idaho Road?

Having traveled throughout the western United States extensively in my time as a licensed driver, I can say I've been on some pretty hairy roadways. One stretch of highway that extends from south to central Idaho is dubbed one of the most dangerous in all the Gem State.

I've had the privilege of taking Highway 75 north from Shoshone to Stanley many times in my life. I marvel at the beauty of the Sawtooth Scenic Byway every time I'm on it. The byway extends for nearly 80 miles through some of the most incredible scenery you'll see anywhere. Galena Summit is at an elevation of 8,727 feet, and has 360 degrees of marvelous landscape surrounding it.

Dangerousroads.org has the summit listed as one of the highest paved roads in the state. It certainly has its twists and turns, but isn't even close to the worst road I've traveled as far as safety is concerned. That distinction would have to go to Highway 89 in Lake Tahoe, more precisely, the portion of the narrow, two-lane road that curves around Emerald Bay. It's the kind of drive that you have to be alert at all times, especially in the winter.

Animals also make Galena Summit a dangerous highway to travel. There hasn't been a single time I haven't had a close call with deer coming down from the summit roughly 20 miles south of Stanley. It's a beautiful drive, but like Hwy 89 near Tahoe, you have to pay close attention behind the wheel at all times.
