Many people would argue that getting healthy in 2025 is difficult. Some might say, "It's not that hard! You just need discipline to get up and exercise, and awareness to know what you're putting in your body!"

While true, navigating the tricky world of eating "healthy" is more complex than it sounds.

Rice Sold In Idaho Isn't As Healthy As You Think

Many of us have heard about the recent initiative "Making Idaho Healthy Again," with lawmakers banning candy and soda from being purchased with SNAP benefits. On a national level, it was announced that certain dyes in our food would be banned due to health concerns, including behavioral issues and allergies in some people.

Many would consider these to be solid steps towards making healthy choices that lead to a healthier lifestyle, and surely, we're on the right path, right?

Not so fast!

A new report from Healthy Babies Bright Futures (HBBF) revealed that "tests of 145 rice samples from retailers nationwide reveal that rice sold in the U.S. remains widely contaminated with arsenic."

What Is Arsenic, And Is It Bad To Find In Our Food?

According to the FDA, "arsenic may be present in food from the environment where foods are grown, raised, or processed," and if exposed to high levels, arsenic can be harmful to our health.

The study from HBBF revealed that more than one-fourth of the rice samples tested exceeded federal arsenic limits for infant rice cereal. With rice being so popular as a side item, it should also be alarming to learn that "rice has two to five times more heavy metals than other grains, on average."

Another shocking revelation from the new study revealed that most rice brands exceed federal and state health benchmarks for heavy metals. It should also be noted that precooked rice can have some of the most toxic forms of arsenic.

The silver lining? Experts say that quinoa, couscous, and barley have significantly lower total heavy metal contamination than rice... that's a good thing, right?
