The new year has begun, and many are aiming to make it the best year yet. Drive around and observe the gyms and their parking lots, as well as the number of treadmills in use. Alternatively, visit the grocery store and note the amount of healthy food purchased over the last few days. Sadly, many of these gym goers will soon stop going to the gym, the food will be thrown away, and the gym will be less crowded than it was at the beginning of 2026. Making New Year's resolutions is something many do, but there are some that you should stay away from making in Idaho in 2026.

Don't BASE Jump Off the Perrine Bridge

While BASE jumping off the Perrine Bridge is an adventure that many seek, it shouldn't be a resolution, especially if you have lived in the Magic Valley for a few years. Resolutions are about bettering yourself, and jumping off a bridge, while an amazing experience, will not do so. If you are afraid of heights, afraid of things going wrong, or have put off jumping off the bridge for a while, setting it as a goal will likely lead to disappointment. Shoot for goals that you want to do, and not dream of doing.

Don't Tag a Moose in Idaho

Idaho is full of many hunters, and there is a lot of wildlife to be tagged in the Gem State. Tagging a moose is a once-in-a-lifetime tag in Idaho, and making it a resolution to be the year you get one could lead you to failing at your goal. If you are not drawn for the tag, you will have to wait another year. If you are lucky enough to be drawn, then setting it as a resolution may make more sense, but until you know, it is best to set more realistic goals.

Don't Learn to Ski or Snowboard in Idaho

Many people in Idaho enjoy skiing and snowboarding, with many others saying every winter that this will be the year that they learn. The problem is that it isn't cheap, and as each year passes by, it is tough to convince yourself to get on a set of skis or on a snowboard. It is okay to live near the mountains and not do either. There are plenty who choose not to. Unless you have plans in place and a day or two to dedicate to learning, it is best to leave it off your resolutions list.

Don't Buy a Trailer to Go Camping in Idaho

Many residents in the Magic Valley own a trailer or a camper of some sort. There are some incredible places to camp in Southern Idaho, and all throughout the state. Seeing all the trailers can make it tempting to get your own and give in to the peer pressure. If you are someone who doesn't enjoy camping, though, has a busy schedule, or doesn't know where to go or how to camp, then it might not be for you. Buying a trailer will likely lead to an investment that you didn't want to make and will take up room in your driveway. If you do enjoy camping and are tired of being in a tent or want to upgrade, then getting a new trailer should be on your 2026 list of things to do.

Don't Buy a Lottery Ticket in Idaho

As mentioned above, setting resolutions is about bettering yourself and setting realistic goals. While winning the lottery would improve your life financially, the odds are higher that you will spend money on tickets with little to no return, and could have spent that money elsewhere. The odds of winning are slim, and you are better off setting resolutions you have more control over.

Setting resolutions and goals for the new year is never a bad thing, but make sure to stick with achievable ones that benefit you, make you a better person, and that you have a little more control over.
