California Among States Bracing for Upcoming Job Loss Impact

The labor markets in California, New York, and Washington are preparing for large layoffs expected in the next few months. 25,210 WARN notices have been issued for these 3 states.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act helps ensure advance notice in cases of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs. The U.S. Department of Labor has compliance assistance materials to help workers and employers understand their rights and responsibilities under the provisions of WARN.

The WARN Act is a federal law that was enacted in 1988. Employees and government officials have to be notified 60 days in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. If a plant closing will result in losing 50 full-time positions within a month, or a company is planning a workforce reduction of 500 full-time employees at one location or 33% of a company’s full-time workforce notice has to be given.

Where are Layoffs Expected in Washington, New York, and California

California has been notified of 13, 259 in the tech industry, hospitality, and healthcare sectors.

Washington expects at least 5,994 employees to lose their jobs from companies like Expedia, Walmart, and Del Monte. RaterLabs alone is expected to permanently lay off 3,657 effective April 6.

New York has submitted plans for at least 5,951 Layoffs from companies like Citigroup, UPS, Paramount Global, and even The College of Saint Rose.

These layoffs can be attributed in part to borrowing costs for businesses are on the rise and the number of banks willing to lend is shrinking. Job seekers may be knocking at other doors very soon.
