Talking on the phone while driving has become nearly essential these days. It is hard to find someone behind the wheel who is not illegally texting and driving or talking on their phone. It is not easy to be detached when running errands, going to get food, or driving to work. Nowadays, cars have ways to talk on the phone without having to dial a number, use hands, or even look at the screen. It is nice to have these features, but it shows how reliant society is on their phones. When interacting with others, like in a drive-thru it is a courtesy to get off the phone, but not many do that these days. It does raise the question, is talking on your cell phone when going through a drive-thru in Idaho illegal, and if so what would the cost be if caught?

It is rude to be on your cell phone when ordering at a drive-thru unless you are asking them what they want you to order for them. When pulling up to the window, it is even more rude to keep the conversation going, and not give the cashier or employee the time of day. Unfortunately, many do not care and can't get off their phones long enough to be respectful towards those making their food. Sadly, this is where society is nowadays, and many can't get off their phone long enough to interact with someone who is doing them a service. It is best to hang up the phone and call back the person on the other end once you have your food and are out of the drive-thru, or to put them on hold until you are done.

In July 2020 a law was passed that banned drivers from using their cell phones behind the wheel unless it was hands-free. Luckily, most cars have these features, making this not that big of a deal. What does it mean when it comes to a drive-thru though? Since the vehicle is often not moving in a drive-thru, it is technically not against the law. Many people use their phones to pay for their food, for apps to get points or discounts, to read a text, or to be on a call to order for someone not in the car. While not against the law, it is still best to put the phone down to not hold up the line, be polite to the employees, and avoid rear-ending into a car in front of you.

The next time you go through a drive-thru in the Gem State, make sure to get off your phone and give the employees the time of day. If you need to use it to pay or order for someone else, that is fine, but don't be having casual conversations and being rude to the people who control your food. You might regret it if you do.
