It is finally here. Thanksgiving week has begun, and many will be spending time in the kitchen preparing food, cleaning the house to host guests, and working hard to enjoy some time off of work this week. With so much happening, it is easy to forget something that you need, or perhaps you are looking to start holiday shopping as this week also kicks off the beginning of the holiday season. It is always nice to know your options when making an emergency run to the grocery store, doing some early holiday shopping, or trying to avoid family members. Here are the stores that will be open and closed on Thanksgiving this year in the Golden State.

Stores Closed on Thanksgiving in California

Like many of us, even retail workers want to enjoy the holidays. For some that isn't possible, but over the last few years, places that never shut their doors on Thanksgiving have begun to do so. Thanksgiving had become a day that many ate quickly to hit the stores and start shopping to get the best deals possible, but since the pandemic, many stores have decided to shut their doors and wait until Black Friday to let the shopping begin. Many places are not closed on Turkey Day, and below is a list of many of the major retail stores that will not be open this year on Thanksgiving in California.

Best Buy Closed on Thanksgiving in California

Best Buy is commonly one of the most crowded places to shop during the holiday weekend, but you will have to wait until Black Friday, as the popular store will be closed on Thanksgiving. You can wait outside if you choose, but you will be waiting for a while and all through the night. 

Costco Closed on Thanksgiving in California

Costco is many people's favorite store, especially during the holidays. While Costco is a great place to visit and would be nice to stop at to begin holiday shopping or to make a last-minute grocery stop, they will be closed on Thanksgiving as they have been for many years, and it won't be changing this year, if ever. 

Target Closed on Thanksgiving in California

Like Best Buy, Target used to be a popular place to shop on Thanksgiving, but like others on this list, a few years ago they decided to give the holiday off to their employees to prepare for the big shopping day the following day. Target will not be an option for you this Thanksgiving, but there will be plenty of shoppers in the following days. 

Walgreens Closed on Thanksgiving in California

All Walgreens used to be open on Thanksgiving, and select stores, such as 24/7 ones will remain open, but many will be closed this holiday season. If you are hoping to pick up a prescription on your day off or to get something to help your stomach with all the food, you will have to look elsewhere. If you are unsure if your Walgreens is one of the ones closed, you can always call ahead or check before Thursday. 

Walmart Closed on Thanksgiving in California

Walmart used to be open on Thanksgiving every year, giving customers a chance to make that emergency grocery store run, to start holiday shopping, to grab an outfit, or to escape family. Since 2020, they have decided to close their doors and let their employees enjoy the holiday, and that trend will continue this year again. Make sure to get to Walmart on Wednesday if you need something that can not wait until Friday.

While many places will not be open on Thanksgiving, some stores will keep their doors open. If you need to make that emergency run to the grocery store, to get something to help digest the food you are piling into your mouth, or to start some early holiday shopping to escape your relatives, there are options available, and you have to know where to go.

It is always nice to have a grocery option on the holiday, and this is the one you will want to go to. 

CVS Open on Thanksgiving in California

With Walgreens closed, CVS will be your best option for finding anything you need to help with digesting all the food you plan to eat, if someone gets sick, or anything else you may need. 

Old Navy Open on Thanksgiving in California

Occasionally things will spill on your holiday clothes, you decide you don't like what you planned to wear, or maybe the weather is a little different than you thought. If any of these happen, Old Navy will have you covered on Thanksgiving for clothing options. 

Starbucks Open on Thanksgiving in California

With Thanksgiving being such a long day, a cup of coffee is a must for many. With other coffee shops closed, Starbucks will be your best option unless you plan on making a cup at home. If you need some help dealing with your family and starting your day, stop by a Starbucks on your drive to wherever you are having Thanksgiving this year.
