An accident between a pickup truck and a freight train in Southern Idaho has been called a ‘serious collision’ and resulted in the driver of the vehicle being transported by medical helicopter to a local hospital.

Idaho State Police reported that the accident happened near Dietrich in Lincoln County on April 8th.

The crash happened on the train crossing, which does appear to have signs but no lights, at 189 South 1000 East, a few minutes before 6:45 PM.

In the ISP report, they share the following information regarding the collision:

A 74-year-old-male from Dietrich was traveling northbound on 1000 E in a white 2012 GMC Sierra. The pickup collided with the train and was struck on his rear passenger side, causing the vehicle to roll.

The driver of the pickup truck was not wearing a seatbelt and required transport by air ambulance to a local hospital.

Idaho State Police will continue their investigation into the accident.

There have been numerous train vs vehicle collisions in Idaho over the last few years.

In many of the accidents, the drivers of the vehicles were cited for failing to obey a railroad crossing signal. In 2021, a pickup truck was hit by a train in Jerome, and 3 people were killed when a car was struck by a train in 2023.
