The Northern Lights are making a return engagement over portions of Idaho this week.  When I was a little boy, I remember my dad pointing them out.

Or he thought it was the Northern Lights. Or it was heat lightning.

Or, I think it was the Northern Lights.  Or, he thought it was the Northern Lights.  Or, it was heat lightning which isn’t really caused by heat.  I used to watch minor league baseball with a friend from his seats along the 3rd base line.  About 40 miles beyond the outfield was Lake Ontario.  We would see dancing lights in the sky.  My buddy was an astronomer and meteorologist.  He explained what we called heat lighting was a distant thunderstorm over the lake.

I go to bed early so I may not get my first glance of the real Northern Lights this week.  And, there are clouds in the forecast.
