There are a lot more cows in Idaho then there were this time last year. According to the most recent statistics from the USDA's National Agricultural Service, the state's number of milk cows jumped 21,000 from March 2010 to March 2011, totaling approximately 575,000 head. As a result, March milk production jumped 11.7 percent from February 2011, totaling 1.08 million pounds. Nationwide, the average dairy cow produced 1,872 pounds of milk in March. While Idaho's milk production jumped, America's dairyland slipped, with production down in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
