What would you do? What would you do if you found a snake inside your home or in your yard while cleaning or doing chores? Would you scream like a little girl? Would you run away? Would you pick it up and handle it like a boss by tossing it in the trash? Would you be one of those crazy people who pick it up and keep it as a pet? Would you try to mow over it with your mower if outside? Would you move out and let the snake take over your home? Everyone has feelings about snakes, but what are yours, and what would you do if one were in your home or yard?

Snakes can be terrifying, and it isn't uncommon to have a fear of these slithering creatures. There are many poisonous ones in the world, and some of them call the Magic Valley home. Some are harmless, but unless you have done your research on snakes, you may not know which ones are deadly and which ones are less dangerous. Even if not poisonous, a snake bite can still hurt and do some damage. There are those in the area who love snakes and enjoy collecting them, giving them a home, and protecting them. Most individuals are afraid of them, and the sight of one is enough to make them run away and scream like a little child. If you see one, how would you react?

Snakes in Idaho Homes and Yards

Recently, I came across a snake crossing the street in front of my home, and it wasn't a small garden snake but a thick, four-foot-long snake. It was concerning, as I had never seen one around my home until this one, and now I am paranoid that there could be more. One of my coworkers is deathly afraid of snakes, and said he would sell the home and move. This is one reaction, and not one I am against, but until it crosses into my yard, I believe I am still safe. If one gets into your home, though, how do you handle it? Do you hit it with something? Do you run out and let it control the room and risk not knowing where it is and living in fear? My choice is to burn the house with it inside, or send in one of my kids to take care of it.

Snakes are not something you mess around with, especially if you are not sure if they are poisonous or not. I have held and petted snakes with trainers handing them to me, but snakes in the wild are a different beast. Make sure to keep your eyes out for them as they will be seeking warmth soon, and your home, garage, shed, or other enclosures could make for the perfect home. If you randomly discovered a snake in your home or yard, what would you do?
