Looking at the extended weather forecast for Idaho, it looks like outdoor season is here.

It’s time for camping on the weekends, getting the boat and kayaks ready, and making sure the BBQ grill is ready for action.

I’m not good at cooking food on a grill, so I love it when my friends invite me to BBQ events, and all I have to do is bring a veggie tray. I even love it when my neighbors are cooking on a grill, and I can go outside and enjoy the free BBQ smells.

9 Meats That You Can’t Legally Serve at an Idaho BBQ

With the exception of one time somebody brought tofu hot dogs to a BBQ (not a good idea BTW), I’ve never really questioned what was being served. But, there are some meats that you can’t legally cook in Idaho…or shouldn't, like tofu dogs. If you count that as ‘meat’.

In a state where roadkill is legal to eat, you might be surprised that anything is off limits.

Obviously, there are meats that you would never think about serving. If the animal is on an endangered species list, you can’t eat it. Other animals are illegal to serve in Idaho that you may not have ever thought about because they aren’t readily available or even considered food.

You can’t eat shark fins, sea turtles, or any marine mammal, like dolphins and whales. We don’t live near an ocean anyway, so getting those wouldn’t be on our radar as a readily available food.

But, this list of 9 illegal meats is all animals that you can find in Idaho, maybe even in your yard, but you can’t eat them. We’ll start with a few obvious ones and then get into the surprise ones, so keep scrolling to see them all.

Are you surprised by anything on that list? The ‘lungs’ were a surprise for me. Not that I would ever want to eat them, but the fact that there’s a law against it was interesting and surprising.

You may have been surprised that we included kangaroos on the list of ‘readily available’ animals, but you can own one as a pet in Idaho. Just don’t eat it.

LOOK: Here are the pets banned in each state

Because the regulation of exotic animals is left to states, some organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States, advocate for federal, standardized legislation that would ban owning large cats, bears, primates, and large poisonous snakes as pets.
