Elementary schools throughout Idaho can apply now to get state-administered federal money funds to provide fresh fruit and vegetables as healthy snack options for students. Idaho will receive nearly $2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to distribute to schools, awarding grants that will amount to about $50 per student, State Department of Education spokeswoman Melissa McGrath said. Schools use the funding to provide free fresh fruit and vegetables as snacks to students throughout the school day, outside of breakfast and lunch.  Idahochool chief tom luna says The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is a great way to promote healthier eating habits. To qualify for the grant program, more than 50 percent of a school’s students must be eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Elementary schools with the highest number of eligible students will be given priority during the selection process.
