The state is adopting new income guidelines for a federal nutrition program that serves women, infants and children. The new guidelines set to take effect on July 1 are higher, which means more families will be eligible for the program, commonly called WIC. The program provides nutritious foods like milk, eggs, cereal, juice and beans at no cost to families who qualify. The program targets women who are pregnant, breast-feeding or those who have recently been pregnant, along with kids under the age of five. Under the new guidelines, a family of three can earn up to $34,281 a year and qualify. Under the old income guidelines, that family's income would have been limited to $33,874 in order to qualify for the program. In Idaho, about 44,000 residents receive WIC assistance.
