BOISE, Idaho (KLIX) A new memorial at Gowen Field now stands in Boise to honor soldiers killed in the line of duty during deployment to Iraq since 2004. The Idaho National Guard says the 116th Cavalry Brigade Fallen Soldier Memorial was dedicated Friday to honor soldiers killed during the 2004-2005 and 2010-2011 deployments to Iraq.

“This is to show the families and loved ones of those who have been lost, that they haven’t been forgotten,” said Lt. Col Jim Harper, 116th CBCT executive officer. The memorial, a battlefield cross made of a cast of a soldier's rifle stuck in the ground next to boots and helmet, stands at the Gowen Field Memorial Park.

According to the Idaho National Guard, Brig. Gen. Alan C. Gayhart read the names of the 13 soldiers who died during the deployments. Soldiers in attendance hung dog tags on the memorial during the ceremony. The 116th Cavalry Association Memorial was also re-dedicated during the ceremony.
