MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho (KLIX)-Emergency crews responded to a fatal single-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 in Elmore County on Saturday that claimed the life of a Filer High School student athlete.

According to the Elmore County Sheriff's Office, at a little before 5 p.m. a 17-year-old male driver, for an unknown reason, lost control of the Ford Ranger he was driving, overcorrected and went off the right shoulder near Mountain Home. The teen was taken to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise where he died.

The teen was not identified by Elmore County Authorities, however, Filer High School Principal Leon Madsen has confirmed the student as Mayson Martinez, a senior and multi-sport athlete at the high school.

A candlelight vigil was held at the baseball field Sunday evening in Filer for Martinez. Madsen said counselling was made available Monday and will be made available to students once they return from the Thanksgiving holiday next week on an as needed basis.

A 16-year-old passenger in the pickup was able to get out and was taken to St. Luke's in Mountain Home. The sheriff's office said neither one had been wearing a seat belt. Because of the age of the victims, the sheriff's office declined to identify them.
