Valentine's Day has passed. Many people bought chocolates, flowers, cards, and other things for the occasion, but there is one thing that not enough of was bought. Many couples and people across the state of Idaho enjoyed the night with their significant others and spent some intimate time together to celebrate the day of love. While for many couples, nothing is needed for this, for others they should be prepared. Many may not be aware, but this week is national condom week and hopefully many bought one to honor this week, but many certainly did not.

While most people may snicker when they hear the word condoms, as I did, they are a useful tool to have to help prevent pregnancy and STDs. While that is mostly common sense, what many do not know is that around 20 million people are diagnosed with an STD infection each year. More than half of these infections are to people aged between 15 to 24. In south-central Idaho alone there were over 800 STD infections in 2021.

If you need condoms or are embarrassed to buy them, the South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) has five offices across the region and offers free condoms, as well as information on how to properly use them. Often people with an STD will not know because STDs are commonly asymptomatic which means they don't have any symptoms. It is smart to get tested often if you are switching partners frequently. IF you need more details, be sure to visit Prevention - STD Information from CDC

If you switch partners and are active, make sure to be smart and safe. Get tested, take precautions, and help prevent the spread of STDs in southern Idaho. Have fun, enjoy your freedom, but take your partners and future partners into account this year. Don't be a fool and wrap your or his tool. Celebrate national condom week accordingly and safely.
