Airman Killed During Rock Climbing Training Near Boise

An airman with the U.S. Air Force was killed during special training outside of Boise, Idaho Tuesday. According to the Ada County Coroner Dotti Owens, 33-year-old Peter Kraines, of North Carolina died at the Black Cliffs rock climbing area just off Highway 21.

According to the Department of Defense, Kraines was a tech sergeant with the Special Tactics pararescueman with the 24th Special Operations Wing. Sgt. Kraines was taking part in training for a mountain rescue technique. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in March of 2011 and began training for the pararescue program.

According to the DOD, the airman was a military static-line jumper, free fall jumper, as well as a certified combat scuba diver. Kraines was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The incident is under investigation.

Sgt. Kraines held a number of medals and awards including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
