KETCHUM, Idaho (KLIX) – A backcountry avalanche warning has been extended through Wednesday morning in mountains near the Wood River Valley. 

The National Weather Service relayed the bulletin before 8 a.m. Tuesday at the request of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.

Affected areas include the Boulder, Pioneer, Smoky, Soldier and White Cloud mountains as well as the Sawtooth Mountains near Bellevue, Fairfield, Galena, Hailey, Ketchum, Smiley Creek, Stanley, Summit and Sun Valley.

The warning threat is “high,” the advisory reads. “Heavy snowfall and wind are creating widespread areas of unstable snow. Both human-triggered and natural avalanches are likely.”
