Firefighters Battle Blaze Near Idaho/Utah Border

UPDATE: Interstate 84 reopened Tuesday after 5 p.m., and as of 9 p.m. the fire had burned roughly 3,000 acres.

IDAHO/UTAH BORDER (KLIX) – Fire crews are battling a tough blaze near the Idaho/Utah border. Nine engines and crew are fighting to contain and get the blaze under control. No structures have been threatened.

The fire that started Monday has grown to around 2,500 acres, said BLM spokeswoman Kelsey Brizendine.

On Tuesday afternoon Interstate 84 from the I-86 junction to the Utah border was closed in both directions due to the fire. Motorists are advised by the Idaho Transportation Department to detour to Interstate 15 through eastern Idaho.

Multiple fuels – grass, brush and juniper – are feeding the flames.

Currently, six BLM engines, three engines from Raft River Rural Fire Department, five single-tankers and an air attack craft is fighting the fire.

Cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, Brizendine said. At about 1 p.m. Tuesday, fire investigators hadn't yet arrived on scene. No structures are threatened, she said, and no containment or control times have yet been given.

“The wind is a concern right now. It’s the reason it’s so active,” Brizendine said.

BLM crews also have been keeping busy fighting two blazes closer to Twin Falls – The Bray Lake Fire near Bliss and the Gun Range Fire in Jerome.
