ITD to Host Highway Safety Summit
BOISE, Idaho (News Release) – Reducing crashes on Idaho roads takes a team effort. That team will be on display on April 18-19 as the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety will host its annual Highway Safety Summit.
This year the team aspect of safety will take center stage with keynote speaker Larry Gelwix.
Gelwix is a legendary rugby coach who led Utah’s Highland Rugby Team to 18 national championships winning 379 games and losing just 9 matches during his career that has spanned nearly four decades. His team was the subject of the feature film “Forever Strong.”
“We’re really excited to have coach Gelwix join us this year,” said Highway Safety Manager John Tomlinson. “His enthusiasm and energy is contagious and it’s important to have that energy as we work to keep our roads safe.”
The conference is Idaho’s largest statewide conference dedicated to eliminating the tragic toll of deaths and injuries on our state’s roads. The conference is expected to draw nearly 300 state and local leaders, police officers, first responders and healthcare professionals to the Boise Centre.
Participants will attend workshops and presentations focusing on topics such as overall highway safety, distracted driving, impaired driving, passenger safety, emergency response, and much more. Each presentation is designed to showcase tools that can be immediately put into practice, positively affecting Idaho’s roadway travelers.
“We really want to move the needle,” Tomlinson said. “This conference gives us a great chance to meet with our partners from across the state to see what’s working and where we can make improvements.”
