ATHOL, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho State Police say a Washington man and two young children are dead after their vehicle crashed with another that was traveling in the wrong lane.

Authorities say the crash took place Saturday morning at about 3:40 a.m. just south of Athol in Kootenai County. 33-year-old Mathew-Michael Baroni of Spokane was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 95 when he crashed into a pickup truck traveling northbound in the southbound lane. The two vehicles collided head on. Police say Baroni and two children who share his last name — 8-year-old Madilyn and 6-year-old Molly — died on the scene.

The three were not wearing seatbelts. The driver of the pickup, 27-year-old Ryan Turner of Hayden, Idaho, was transported to Kootenai Medical Center. His condition is unknown. Authorities say they're still investigating why Turner was in the wrong lane.
